Beavers

6:30 – 7:30 pm / Monday / Age 6 – 8

Our Beavers can join from age 6, at the beginning of a new term or after a half term. Once they turn 8, they will move to Cubs, again starting at the beginning of a new term or after a half term.

A mix of boys and girls, they are divided into four ‘lodges’, which enables them to work together in their lodges to create and craft things, or compete together against the other lodges in games or activities. This helps them to build friendships, confidence and teamwork.

Activities vary enormously. Most meetings involve a game or two and a main activity, which might be making something, hearing a talk, or perhaps cooking, all working towards earning badges for skills learnt.

Particularly in the summer term when the weather allows, we play games outdoors, either in our garden or in Chiswick House Gardens.

Uniform

Beavers wear a turquoise Beavers sweatshirt over a T-shirt and dark blue trousers. There is also a turquoise Beaver polo shirt for activities in the summer or to wear under their sweat shirt during the winter. It’s advisable for them to wear trainers for running around in. The Beavers tops need to be bought. Here is a link.

Beavers also wear a 20th Chiswick scarf, which is awarded to the Beaver along with a woggle when they are invested into Beavers. This is usually after a trial couple of weeks of meetings. They don’t need to wear uniform before they are invested, just in case they don’t want to join. For their Investiture and once invested, they should then come in uniform.

Rolling a scarf

After you have ironed your scarf, place it on a clean, flat surface as shown below.

Roll the scarf tightly from the centre smoothing out the ends as you go. Roll it in on itself with the blue on the right. Continue rolling until the point of the scarf is about as long as your hand.

Try to ensure that the scarf remains the same tightness from the middle to the end. It is quite easy to leave one of the ends behind!

Now put it around your neck with the blue to the right shoulder and tuck the two points into your woggle and push up the woggle to tighten the scarf around your neck.

Badge

Badges give children:

• A tangible reward for effort and participation
• A sense of pride and accomplishment
• Public recognition in front of their peers (which is hugely motivating at that age)

Badges are awarded by their Beavers Leader once they are earned. It is also possible to earn badges outside of Beavers meetings. Parents can review the requirements of earning badges, ensure their children achieve them and report the achievements to a Leader. The ultimate Beavers badge is the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award, which is achieved by earning the required number of challenge awards and activity badges.

Where to sew on badges

There are different types of badge, the main types being activity badges and challenge awards. The diagram below shows where all the different types of badge go on the uniform. For Beavers, this will be on the turquoise sweatshirt, which is their main uniform.

About Us

We are 20th Chiswick Scouts! Everyone is welcome here; it’s a place to belong. We play games, we cook, we camp and we make things. Each week in term time, we learn something new – and we’re here to have fun!

It feels like adventure not school!

We’re based in Chiswick, where we have our own Scout H.Q. and garden called The Ranch and we’re right behind Chiswick House and Gardens, whose grounds we can use for outdoor activities.
